03Cell science, illustrated

Four structures, and what each one is.

These are general descriptions of the biology the clinic’s programme names refer to. They describe what each structure is, not what HESCA does with it and not what any treatment achieves.

NK and TIL cells

  1. Both are lymphocytes, a class of cell in the immune system.
  2. NK cells act without being sensitised to a specific target first.
  3. TIL is the name given to T cells found within tumour tissue.
  4. These are programme names on the clinic’s printed list, not descriptions of any procedure.

Mesenchymal stem cells

  1. Stromal cells found in marrow, fat and several other tissues.
  2. In culture they attach to the flask and take a spindle shape.
  3. Under defined conditions they differentiate into bone, cartilage and fat cell types.
  4. A laboratory capability is not the same as a clinical result.

Exosomes

  1. Extracellular vesicles, roughly 30–150 nanometres across.
  2. Released by many cell types; they carry proteins and RNA.
  3. They are a way cells pass material to other cells.
  4. In Canada this remains a research subject; ask what is authorised.
04

Mitochondria

  1. Organelles that generate most of a cell’s ATP.
  2. The folded inner membrane is where that conversion happens.
  3. They carry their own small genome, inherited from the mother.
  4. “Mitochondrial therapy” is a programme name, not a defined procedure.
